Closing the Gender Gap in the Energy Industry: Panel Event

Shell Balance Network and POWERful Women

On Wednesday 21st November 2018, we were delighted to join with Shell’s Balance Network to host an evening of stimulating discussion and networking about the gender gap in the energy industry.

Chaired by Louise Kingham, CEO of the Energy Institute and Board Member for POWERful Women, the packed room of guests enjoyed a unique opportunity to hear from leaders in the sector on how to make progress on gender diversity.  Sinead Lynch, UK Country Chair of Shell and Simon Copp, UK Head of People & Development at Ørsted, fresh from a meeting of POWERful Women’s Energy Leaders’ Coalition, were joined by Lauren Van Der Kolk, Principal at Boston Consulting Group, to speak about common industry challenges, lessons learned and best practice.

Questions from the audience sparked a thought-provoking debate on topics ranging from high level leadership strategies to practical tips for aspiring women.  One attendee said a key takeaway for her was the need to get a sponsor who will endorse your capabilities.  The importance or role models and pro-active CEOs was also highlighted.

Two recently published reports were also highlighted at the event – Shell’s 2018 Gender Pay Gap report and the Business in the Community – The Prince’s Responsible Business Network – Equal Lives report which looked at the issue of Parenthood and Caring in the Workplace.

Our thanks again to Shell UK – in particular to Caroline Missen, Business Advisor to Downstream Director and Chair of the Balance Network, for organising a successful event.
